Peridot has a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale of hardness and fair to good toughness, making it reasonably durable. However, the gemstone is particularly susceptible to damage caused by acids and thermal shock.
MYTHOLOGY & ASSOCIATION
Peridot was worn by leaders in ancient times to make them gentle, fair and wise. Peridot was prized by the Egyptians as the “gem of the sun” and it was supposedly a favourite gemstone of Cleopatra. A Hawaiian myth claims that peridots are the tears of the goddess Pele. According to gemstone lore, peridot will bring good luck, fortune and peace to whoever wears it. Additionally, among the already listed benefits, peridot is said to attract love, friendship and happiness, calm anger and protect against envious thoughts.
